Early Modern Art Blog

Art between 1900-1939

There was at least two major events that happened during the 1900 – 1939 time period, and that was The Great Depression and World War One. World War One happened first, and the result lead into the Great Depression. So  heres a little about the war, that will forever be the first modern war.

John Singer Sargent. Gassed, 1919. The most terrifying new weapon was gas, whose first major use occurred at Ypres, in April 1915, when the Germans released a lethal mist of chlorine that killed, disabled, or panicked hundreds of French and Canadian troops.

Otto Dix “Machine Gunners Advancing” from Der Krieg (1924).

Okay this might not be a painting, I find it to be more like concept art, but its concept art in the matter of this actually being witness by a soldier at the time, and re living what he saw. I still find it very interesting in the perspective that the intensity of the war at the time through the sketches and paintings was so brutal and devastating, you appreciate those who went through it and defended it for us.

Hans Larwin (1873-1938)
Death Directs The Bullet” circa 1917

Painted during WWI

Again in this painting you can see that sense there was so much death at the the time, the artist affiliated the war as almost if demons were guiding the bullets and death was consuming more victims.

Plinio Nomellini, Alle porte d’Italia, 1918

This painting gives more an advancing appearance, you don’t see any killing really the picture, just explosions in the background.

Impressionism

My Impression On Impressionism

After looking at this section, I have come to the conclusion that I am not a huge fan of this era. I like how the artists use bright vivid colors. But there is just something about the finished product that that I just don’t like, compared to that of previous eras. It almost seems as if the artists became more lazy as far bringing detail to their paintings. In this era almost all the paintings I have seen are blurred, random stroke paintings that form a nice painting, but still, the painting itself lacks detail.

Claude Monet(1840-1926)

Claude Monet was the first painter to create the work that is now known as the term impressionism. He is known for painting the same subject numerous times, at different times of  the day,  during different seasons of the year. Through loose brush strokes and dabs of broken color Monet create some pretty brilliant masterpieces.

Haystacks End Of Summer

Haystacks Snow Effect

These are two examples of Monet painting the same subject over again but at a different time and different season. Monet actually created twenty-five in total of this series, during a whole harvest time from end of summer of 1890 to spring of 1891. Each painting was captured at different times of the day, and different seasons with different weather.

San Glorgio Maggiore Venice At Dusk

Monet went to Venice only once. He went with his wife in 1908 and stayed until 1912. Even after his wife had passed away in 1911, he chose to stay. While he was in Venice he started several paintings, most of which he never did finish. a famous quote of Monet was actually that, “Venice is too beautiful to paint.” Only from the death of his wife gave hime the motivation to finish some of his paintings from his time in Venice.  As you can see in his painting, besides the structure of the building itself and its shadow, almost all the colors and randomly place. Yet they flow, and your able to tell what is water and what is sky. Its kinda cool how this effect works.

A View of the Canal between the Lakes of Killarney 1770

Jonathan Fisher 1740-1809

Jonathan Fisher was mostly a landscape painter. I wanted to show the difference between a previous painting era to that of the impressionism era. As you can see, from Jonathan’s painting, there are different styles. Fishers show the detail, whereas Monet blurs it.

Pierre Auguste Renoir 1841-1919

Pierre liked to paint people and everyday things like weekend outings or enjoying a garden or boating. Like Monet, Pierre was one of the first painters with the impressionist style, and also part of the reason the new term was created.

Summer Hats 1894

In this painting, you can see a little more detail then Monet. There is slightly more volume to the painting, which gives the painting, i think that little extra something to stand out. But still, compared to painters of the past, the detail in this painting is faded.

Young Blond Woman 1886

This painting shows a picture of a young woman posing. The detail to me is enough that you can actually make out how the person looks. The blurring of the colors is still motion, and even in the black of the dress you can see red and yellow mixed in. Which i think is a technique used to keep attention to the full image and not have random colors on the canvas.

The Milkmaid 1657- 1658

Johannes Vermeer. Im comparing paintings of people from impressionism era and Barque era. As you can see from this painting there is abundance of detail. Even the tile on floor in the background of the painting has more detail then that of impressionism has in the front of the painting.  From the basket on the ceiling to the dimples in the bread, There is just something about older paintings that can just paint crazy amounts of details, quickly.

Berthe Morisot 1841- 1895

Berthe was the only female to exhibit in the the first Impressionist exhibit. With this being said she also was the most radical of the impressionist. She used very loose brush work.

Woman And Child On The Balcony 1871- 1872

In the painting, you can see that there are parts of the painting where there are stronger detail then other parts. The weaker points tend to run together.

Madonna and Child with the Infant St John 1514

Lucas Cranach was the artist of this painting. Im comparing woman and child of impressionism era with that of one from a Renaissance time frame. As you can tell from this painting he uses dark colors. the detail of the painting is slightly vague but you can still see defining features in the people. The painting itself is not blotted onto the canvas, nor is random color placed anywhere but in the areas of where it needs to be. The proportions of the babies heads seem a little off to me, but it still makes for an excellent painting.

Vincent Van Gogh 1853-1890

Self Portraits 1887

Vincent Van Gogh used a different strategy to convey emotion, and that was done by color. He chose to use color to show light. Van Gogh suffered from emotional swings and live with his brother who happened to be an art gallery owner. He went on self portrait rampage during 1887. Im not sure whether or not he was just trying to find a technique he preferred, but it seems his style changes throughout his paintings. From how I posted these painting it seems he goes from a pretty detailed picture of himself  with just a little amount of color and blur thrown in, to the whole painting being bold colors. In which gave his paintings a more cartoonish appearance.  Van Gogh also had a signature swirly in his picture somewhere.

Rembrants Self Portraits 1659

Rembrants self portraits never really changed as far as technique went. They were always very detail and always showed Rembrants true emotions right from the expression on his face.

David

David

By Bernini

Rome, 1623-1624

Background of Author

Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini was born in Naples as the son of the sculptor Pietro Bernini on December 12, 1598. Giovanni was taught a very young age to sculpt by his father, who gave him lessons. He was gifted from the start and was able to sculpt a perfect angel head out of marble when he was just ten years old. Giovanni moved to Rome with his father in 1608, where his skill became a huge attraction. He even attended a master class at a young age and stole the light away with amazing masterpieces.  Because of his skills, he became famous at a very early age. He was able to sculpt masterpieces without any calculations or auxiliary constructions at astonishing speeds. He was able to show detail in minutes which give the stone a super smooth appearance.
From the age of twenty he started to sculpt the mythological sculptures including this one of David when he was just twenty-five years old. Bernini wasn’t just a sculptor he also was an excellent painter and architect. One of his main works was built-in the city of Rome known as the mighty colonnades. Which were columns set up in a square formation in front of the church of St. Peter.

Influences

Bernini’s original influence was that of his father. He was taught early, and Bernini caught on quickly. But once they moved to Rome and the people started to notice young Bernini, he actually started to become a good friend of the Cardinal’s. Being friends with the cardinal in Rome definitely had its advantages. It made Bernini famous and rich. The Cardinal Scipione Borghese asked of Bernini on several accounts to build sculptures, most of which are still displayed in the city of Rome. This particular sculpture was requested by the Cardinal during  1623 when Bernini was just 24 years old. Bernini was actually currently working on another sculpture project at the time of the request, in which he abandoned his current project to work on the new request of David. It took Bernini seven months to complete David. I believe that his sculptures had to do with The Thirty Year War. Just because this was time frame of the war and also that they were battles over religion. So what’s better than a religious figure in the act of battle?

My Opinion

I think this is an awesome sculpture. I think it would be kind of nice to get paid to create stuff like this. I read somewhere that he used Da Vinci’s references to get ideas for his sculpture, but to me I don’t think that is the case. I think the way Bernini sculpted David was all his own ideas. He has been an amazing sculptor ever since he was little. sculpting comes natural to him, like breathing is to us. I also remember reading the his work is all done without plans, just what he portrays in his head, he was able to envision the finished piece in his mind.

School of Athens

Raphael-School

By Raphael

Rome Italy, in 1509-1511

 Background of the Author

Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino), was an italian painter of the renaissance and was born in Urbino, Italy in 1483 and died on April 6, 1520.  He is known for his clarity of form, visual human grandeur, and composition. Raphael, Michelangelo, and Da Vinci make up the trinity of the great artistic masters of that time period.  Raphael became a very pronounced painter at an early age. Not only did he master this skill but he shared his gift by being a teacher at his own school in Rome. With his teachings, his school even became famous. Raphael also designed buildings, was excellent at drawing and could engrave and print. Most artist of this time period weren’t famous until years after their death, but for Raphael, his work was famous quickly and while he was alive!

Background and Influence of Painting

Because Raphael lived in Florence Italy, he was invited to Rome by he Pope, Julius II, where he was asked by the pope to paint areas in the Vatican. (Biography Online). Michelangelo was also here during this time period, painting the Sistine Chapel. So, of course Raphael’s was somewhat overlooked because of Michelangelo’s masterpiece. But his work was still magnificent.  To me Raphael was influenced by the Catholic Church, because of the Pope requesting him to paint in the Vatican. But I also feel that he was influenced by Reformation. Just by what he actually painted. His painting, The School of Athens, show philosophers, over several time periods, gathered together in one area. (Wikipedia) Each philosopher, brings their own opinion and theories and facts they have to the groups attention, so its as if the philosophers are learning directly from each other about the world, stars, God, and how things work. Raphael even included himself in his painting, standing amongst one of the groups.  (Smart History)

My Opinion

I feel that this is a excellent painting. I like how he brings the old philosophers with current ones of the time period. It makes you kind of wonder what would really happen if you did bring them all together. To me, I think that this painting is a rather calm version of how things would really go if they all talked about their philosophical opinions. Im picturing almost complete chaos. They all would be in favor of their own opinion and defend it. I say this because every philosopher in this painting were very strongly opinionated in their studies.
