My Impression On Impressionism
After looking at this section, I have come to the conclusion that I am not a huge fan of this era. I like how the artists use bright vivid colors. But there is just something about the finished product that that I just don’t like, compared to that of previous eras. It almost seems as if the artists became more lazy as far bringing detail to their paintings. In this era almost all the paintings I have seen are blurred, random stroke paintings that form a nice painting, but still, the painting itself lacks detail.
Claude Monet(1840-1926)
Claude Monet was the first painter to create the work that is now known as the term impressionism. He is known for painting the same subject numerous times, at different times of the day, during different seasons of the year. Through loose brush strokes and dabs of broken color Monet create some pretty brilliant masterpieces.
Haystacks End Of Summer
Haystacks Snow Effect
These are two examples of Monet painting the same subject over again but at a different time and different season. Monet actually created twenty-five in total of this series, during a whole harvest time from end of summer of 1890 to spring of 1891. Each painting was captured at different times of the day, and different seasons with different weather.
San Glorgio Maggiore Venice At Dusk
Monet went to Venice only once. He went with his wife in 1908 and stayed until 1912. Even after his wife had passed away in 1911, he chose to stay. While he was in Venice he started several paintings, most of which he never did finish. a famous quote of Monet was actually that, “Venice is too beautiful to paint.” Only from the death of his wife gave hime the motivation to finish some of his paintings from his time in Venice. As you can see in his painting, besides the structure of the building itself and its shadow, almost all the colors and randomly place. Yet they flow, and your able to tell what is water and what is sky. Its kinda cool how this effect works.
A View of the Canal between the Lakes of Killarney 1770
Jonathan Fisher 1740-1809
Jonathan Fisher was mostly a landscape painter. I wanted to show the difference between a previous painting era to that of the impressionism era. As you can see, from Jonathan’s painting, there are different styles. Fishers show the detail, whereas Monet blurs it.
Pierre Auguste Renoir 1841-1919
Pierre liked to paint people and everyday things like weekend outings or enjoying a garden or boating. Like Monet, Pierre was one of the first painters with the impressionist style, and also part of the reason the new term was created.
Summer Hats 1894
In this painting, you can see a little more detail then Monet. There is slightly more volume to the painting, which gives the painting, i think that little extra something to stand out. But still, compared to painters of the past, the detail in this painting is faded.
Young Blond Woman 1886
This painting shows a picture of a young woman posing. The detail to me is enough that you can actually make out how the person looks. The blurring of the colors is still motion, and even in the black of the dress you can see red and yellow mixed in. Which i think is a technique used to keep attention to the full image and not have random colors on the canvas.
The Milkmaid 1657- 1658
Johannes Vermeer. Im comparing paintings of people from impressionism era and Barque era. As you can see from this painting there is abundance of detail. Even the tile on floor in the background of the painting has more detail then that of impressionism has in the front of the painting. From the basket on the ceiling to the dimples in the bread, There is just something about older paintings that can just paint crazy amounts of details, quickly.
Berthe Morisot 1841- 1895
Berthe was the only female to exhibit in the the first Impressionist exhibit. With this being said she also was the most radical of the impressionist. She used very loose brush work.
Woman And Child On The Balcony 1871- 1872
In the painting, you can see that there are parts of the painting where there are stronger detail then other parts. The weaker points tend to run together.
Madonna and Child with the Infant St John 1514
Lucas Cranach was the artist of this painting. Im comparing woman and child of impressionism era with that of one from a Renaissance time frame. As you can tell from this painting he uses dark colors. the detail of the painting is slightly vague but you can still see defining features in the people. The painting itself is not blotted onto the canvas, nor is random color placed anywhere but in the areas of where it needs to be. The proportions of the babies heads seem a little off to me, but it still makes for an excellent painting.
Vincent Van Gogh 1853-1890
Self Portraits 1887
Vincent Van Gogh used a different strategy to convey emotion, and that was done by color. He chose to use color to show light. Van Gogh suffered from emotional swings and live with his brother who happened to be an art gallery owner. He went on self portrait rampage during 1887. Im not sure whether or not he was just trying to find a technique he preferred, but it seems his style changes throughout his paintings. From how I posted these painting it seems he goes from a pretty detailed picture of himself with just a little amount of color and blur thrown in, to the whole painting being bold colors. In which gave his paintings a more cartoonish appearance. Van Gogh also had a signature swirly in his picture somewhere.
Rembrants Self Portraits 1659
Rembrants self portraits never really changed as far as technique went. They were always very detail and always showed Rembrants true emotions right from the expression on his face.
